KOTA: A resident of Kota, who escaped to US after an attempt-to-murder case was registered against him 30 years ago, has been arrested when he returned to his native place on Sunday.
According to the police, the accused, Paramjeet Singh Sethi, was a resident of Gumanpura area of Kota and was working as a civil contractor in Shahabad area of Baran district when a criminal case was registered against him.
Station house officer (SHO) of Shahabad police station Mohan Lal said on Monday that in 1980, Paramjeet Singh Sethi, son of Heranand Sethi, a resident of Gumanpura area of Kota, was working as a civil contractor along with his brother in Ranipura village of Shahabad area. Meanwhile, Chatu Lal, a resident of Ranipura village, registered a case against him alleging that Sethi had brutally beaten up his friend Hari Singh who was seriously injured.On the complaint of Chatu Lal, Shahabad police registered a case against Sethi under Section 307 (attempted to murder) and Section 323 (beating) of IPC and arrested him on these charges. After some time, he was released on bail by court and in 1982, Sethi went to US and settled in New York along with his family and started his own business.
Meanwhile, since he was not appearing in the court during the hearing of the case registered against him, the court had declared him a fugitive and a standing warrant was issued against him.
According to the SHO, after getting information that Paramjeet Singh Sethi is coming back to Kota for few days, Shahabad police raided his parental house in Gumanpura area of Kota on Sunday and arrested him. He came to Kota on a US passport and visa after getting information that his brother Manmohan Singh and his sons were trying to sell his and his wife's property in Kota and they also prepared fictitious death certificate of his wife. He had also registered a case against his brother Manmohan Singh and other family members in this regard. While an investigation was on his complaint, Shahabad police arrested him in the 30-year-old warrant.
SHO Mohan Lal said that after the arrest of Paramjeet Singh Sethi on Sunday, he immediately informed the superintendent of police of Baran. Since Sethi is a US citizen, the Baran SP also informed the US embassy in New Delhi about the arrest as per the rule.
